I built a visualizer of every member of Congress from 1789 to today with Claude Opus 5.5

It shows every House and Senate member from the 1st Congress to the current one. You can drag or press play on a timeline strip to watch party control shift over 237 years, and click anyone to see their profile. See bills supported/rejected, lobbying, attendance, tenure etc. Completely free, no signups. https://www.onandofftopic.com/congress-visualizer/ How it was made: • Started as a single HTML file I'd built earlier. It needed you to upload CSVs for everything, so I replaced all of that with real data. • Data sources: • Voteview for historical rosters, roll-call votes and DW-NOMINATE ideology scores • The unitedstates/congress-legislators project for terms, committees and bios • FEC bulk files for campaign money and PAC spending • STOCK Act disclosures (via kadoa-org/congress-trading-monitor) for member stock trades • Census ACS 2024 for district demographics, and Census shapefiles for the district map • Wikipedia lists for race/ethnicity, LGBTQ members and 2026 retirements • Historical rosters: each past Congress shows the members seated on its opening day. I rebuilt those from term start and end dates. • Portraits: about 10,000 of them from Voteview's photo archive, unitedstates/images and Wikimedia Commons, packed into sprite sheets so the page loads fast. • Front end: plain JavaScript and SVG, with no framework. Seats animate between the chamber, grid and map views. You can color them by party, ideology, age, tenure, money raised, stock trading and more. • Votes: 142 hand-picked landmark votes plus Voteview's key votes. Each one shows how every seat voted, for example the Civil Rights Act, the Johnson impeachment or the 2025 budget bill. • Built with Claude. I did the planning and design direction, and it did most of the data wrangling and code. It's a static site with no backend, just JSON files and images. Feedback welcome, especially if you spot a data error.
